Well, I did it.
I put my name down to run for Key Club President.
I do like Key Club. Sometimes the meetings can be a drag, sometimes it's hard to find the energy to get off my butt and get to projects. But in the end, it all goes to a good cause, I work with good friends, and Convention is a really illuminating experience. It's hard work, but sometimes (after the bitching), I sit down and think, well, that was good, I did a fine job.
That's why I'm running for President. Because I don't want to see this club go *flush* down the drain.
People, Key Club is a lot of work. Anyone on Executive Board knows that the President runs two meetings (I think an officer meeting too) per week, makes weekly agendas, deals with ALL interclub stuff, and then all the other paperwork and such that comes flooding from the ears. If the club isn't good, a lot of that hinges on the president of that year. And NO, you can't gain all KC experience on the job. A club of around three hundred members dealing with other clubs of similar sizes in a district of over 10,000 means that you cannot just magically become a good president with no experience whatsoever.
That's just logic. To be Pres, I really think you need experience. Though my service hours aren't exactly stellar, I do have the experience on Exec board for it, and if no one more qualified is running, then I think I'm decent for the job.
WHY are people who don't give a shit about KC, have never been on exec board, and pretty much think KC is a joke even BOTHERING to run? It's because of college applications, and though I understand it, it's really quite upsetting.
In case you don't know what I'm talking about, two people who want to run for KC offices (I'm not talking about exec board, I'm talking about prez and stuff) are people who're doing it because either A) they're bored or b) they want it for college aps. They've got no experience on exec board, but they're 1) not Asian and 2) male.
THEY DON'T KNOW ANYTHING. And I think if they get elected (and they might, based on characteristics 1 & 2), they'll ruin the club. Not that they're not smart, and not that I don't like them, but I just think that this is the worst of situations for our club.
Tell me what you think: do you think I can do a good job as Key Club President? I'll devote my time to it and be as fair and dedicated as humanely possible, but it's a hard job, and if you know and love me, I'm always under the wire anyway. But I will do it. I would never drop it. What do you think? Be honest, because I want what's good for the club.
Spoken words: 7 have fallen.
I'd vote for you.

You're a doll. If you can fit it into your schedule and refrain from tearing into confused freshmen, there's no one better.
I will vote for you.

After our talk on the phone...I guess you pretty much know my views on key club. But yea...being President of Key Club at Burroughs was a lot of work...and that was only a small club. However, if you're willing to say 'no' and dedicate your time...you'll do well (Leadership and Consistency). I think you can do a good job as President (you have the right skills...unlike *cough**cough* someone who will not be named), but you still need to learn and acquire more experience. If you have any questions, you can ask me. :)

I'd vote for you if I went to your school. Is there a vote collection box I can slip a slip of paper with your name on it surreptitiously during some sort of break? Would the teachers there notice if I just sat in in some classes?
Posted by Spencer @ 01/23/2004 01:30 PM PST
No, unfortunately you have to sign in your name, and no, the teachers would, for the most part, probably not notice.
Don't try it in Grogan - she would cackle "Nevermore!" at you, though.
My loves, the support is appreciated.
