{ Screen Shot } (from the OP)
A girl wearing a long red jacket, necklace with a cross, a tank top, and a streak of red in her hair is being asked out by another guy. He says that even though she has an akameshu (the red streak in her hair that means she's taken), she doesn't have a boyfriend, right? So how about she goes out with him? The girl drags him closer, and he takes that as a sign that she wants to kiss him. She then bonks him on the head with a white purse, screaming at him not to fool around. He goes flying into the sky. [Note : In this episode, there is writing on the scenes all over the place.]
Suddenly in another scene, a girl in SD (super-deformed) form is standing next to a chalkboard, which has "GALS Language Course for good boys and girls" written at the top, with little hearts. Below it is written "Chozuku", meaning fool around. The girl, pointing at the board with a pointer, says that this is GALS basics. { Screen Shot }
Everyone in the street is watching the two as the girl yells at him that no one would ever like a clueless guy like him. She says that he shouldn't take her lightly, the asshole. He gets a nosebleed, and freaks out a bit. Three girls than run up, one with yellow hair, the leader with red, and the last with blue. They all look pretty much the same with 'colored' skin, meaning it's not naturally that dark. Little signs pop up, pointing to them, saying that they're "Ganguro" - translation notes state that a gangura is literally 'blackface' - they want to look black and 'American.' The red-head yells - what did that girl do to her boyfriend?
The other girl yells back at her, telling her to shut up. They squabble for a moment, and then finally the first girl we met asks if she really wants to start a fight, knowing who she is? The red-haired 'Ganguro' doesn't know who shoe is. The first girl introduces herself as Shibuya's "Number One" [Note: Shibuya is the city], Queen of the GALS, Kotobuki Ran. [Little signs pop up around her, saying that she's: Sixteen years old, No. 1, and has an Akameshu.] { Screen Shot }
[ Title Screen : The Queen of The Gals: Go Go Kotobuki Ran! ]
The redhead doesn't recognize the name, but her lackeys realize that this is the same Kotobuki who has been causing a lot of trouble in Shibuya. Horrified, they want to run, but the redhead says that it's a GAL rule to never back down from a challenge. { Screen Shot } Ran cracks her fist together, saying that she's really got some guts. The three girls suddenly back away, and suddenly, Ran sees a policeman there, who says that she needs to be taken to the station. As he drags her away, the three girls and the guy laugh hysterically. Smiling evilly, Ran throws the white purse at him, and he falls over. She yells that she doesn't even want the stupid bag he gave her. He's now unconscious.
[I think this is supposed to be some sort of scene change marker - SD Ran is dancing.]
The policeman from earlier is really annoyed, talking about how he's here to keep the peace in Shibuya. [A sign says that they're at the Shibuya police station.] But, of course, she's here causing trouble every single day. He asks Ran if she's listening. Ran has her feet on the table as she leans back in her chair. In SD form, he stands up on the desk, yelling that if he, her older brother, hadn't saved her, she'd really be pulled in for questioning. She should be grateful! [An arrow and words label them as 'Big Brother' and 'Little Sister.'] { Screen Shot } She says thank you very sarcastically. Rivers of tears pour down his face, and he says he's crying because she's so hopeless.
An image of her father pops up, like the screenshot here. { Screen Shot } Her brother says out loud that their father is a big boss. A woman's picture appears, like this screenshot. { Screen Shot } The next picture is Ran's brother, with little signs reading: 'Plain old cop', 'single', and his name, Kotobuki Yamato (age twenty-five). { Screen Shot } Still crying, her brother says that she was born in a police family, yet she's so...
Ran pops up, and says that just so he'll know, she's not planning on becoming a cop like their parents at ALL [Note: she actually says 'at all' for a very long time.] Her brother looks annoyed, while she says that she plans on being a GAL until their parents give up. Leaning back in her chair, she says that being a policewoman just doesn't suit her; it's so tiresome! The bell rings, and they look up.
A girl Ran's age pops up, with little signs reading 'Heart,' 'Yamato,' 'Ran's Best Friend,' and her name, Yamazaki Miyu. { Screen Shot } She exclaims that Miyu-chan has arrived! Her blonde hair is in a short, stylish haircut, and she has a very cute voice.
Holding out a pack lunch, she holds it out to Yamato. Miyu says that she made lunch for him! He looks very pleased. In the background, Ran says, "Woo! A lunch handmade with love! Nice JOB!" Her brother is blushing a little as he tells Ran to shut up. Miyu hugs him, saying that doesn't he think it's romantic that they fell in love because she was pulled in for questioning? [Little hearts are everywhere on the screen.] He protests a little, saying that he's still on duty. A little sign pops up above her head pointing to him, reading "Still, a little happy." { Screen Shot } Miyu says that it's ok, right, Yamato-kun? Then, a speaker on his uniform speaks up, saying that back-up is needed.
Getting on a bike, he tells Miyu thanks for the lunch, and for Ran to go STRAIGHT home. As he rides away, Miyu yells for him to be careful. A little sign pops up, pointing to the bike: 'Brakes broken.' After he's gone, Miyu squeals that he's incredibly cool. Ran has a bored look on her face, and asks how so? Miyu goes into another world with little hearts in the background, and says that when she was very rowdy, he listened to her intently, and wrapped her with his warm heart. A sign points to her shining eyes: 'A Maiden's Love-Filled Eyes.' { Screen Shot } Squealing, she says that is why this is her and Yamato's "Memorial Love Station". Ran looks around and asks if they've kissed. { Screen Shot } Miyu freaks a bit, and whines that not yet; he said he'll wait until she grows up a bit. Ran says that's good; that's better than guys who rush too fast. Miyu says those are amazingly serious words from Ran, who replies back that she feels that if people aren't sure they're really in love, the body should be off limits. Miyu squeals again, holding up her planner, and says that her and Yamato-kun's love is true. "Right, Yamato-kun?" In her planner is a picture of him, which she kisses. { Screen Shot }
Scene change: SD Miyu and Ran dancing weirdly. { Screen Shot }
A man is burning with anger, saying "Kotobuki" over and over. Ran is sleeping. Finally, he yells "KOTOBUKI!" so loud that she looks up dazedly, and says, "Good morning, Nan-sen." He replies, very annoyed, that she should address him as "Nakanishi-sensei." Little signs pop up around his face, reading: nickname : Naka-sen, years as teacher: 25; and his name, Nakanishi-sensei. [Note: Miyu is in the desk next to Ran.] He yells at her that she was late AND she's sleeping in class; what is this? Ran replies lazily that she has to get at least eight hours of sleep for her skin's sake; GALS rule! He yells at her that she should sleep at home. { Screen Shot } Holding a book, he reads out a short poem, and asks her what 'Itazura' means in this sentence. Thinking hard, she exclaims, "An Italian wig!" He says, "What?" She replies, "Well, you have an 'Italia' no 'Zura' (wig). Make it short, and it becomes Itazura!" { Screen Shot } She starts laughing hysterically, and her teacher smacks her on the head with the book, telling her to be more serious.
He then asks a girl named Hoshino to answer, and a pretty, sophisticated girl stands up and gives a neat little explanation, then sits back down. { Screen Shot } The class oohs and aahs. He says that it's a perfect answer from the best student; why can't everyone be more like her? Looking down, he sees that Ran is asleep again, and yells at her not to.
Scene change: SD Sleeping Ran.
At Kounan High School, a girl named Satsuki is squealing, showing off the school bag she got from Meisho Daichi High School. Miyu exclaims that she's envious, while Ran looks on with an interested look on her face. Satsuki replies that she got it from Super High School Student, Asou-kun! Another girl exclaims that she knows what she's talking about! (A little sign pops up next to her head that reads 'Rie.') She pulls out a magazine to a page with a nice-looking blonde guy. { Screen Shot } Satsuki says that this is the guy who placed second in the Super High School Grand Prix! Ran comments that he's quite an 'ikemen.' (A little sign flies by, reading 'Ikemen = Cool Guy.') Satsuki says that actually, she wanted Otohata Rei's, but... On the opposite page is a picture of dark haired guy who looks very good. { Screen Shot } Ran says disgustedly that she hates that type of guy, while Satsuki exclaims that he's much cooler than the other idols around there. [She uses the word DANCHI for 'much cooler'.]
SD Chalkboard appears, with little SD girl with pointer. The board reads 'This won't be on the test. GAL language course!' Below it reads 'Danchi' - Big Difference.
Satsuki is now sitting on a desk with her legs crossed, looking smug as she states that holding a Meisho Daichi bag is a big status symbol for a GAL. Ran suddenly pops into the picture, looking like a ghost as she says eerily, "I waaaant..." She suddenly exclaims, "I WANT ONE TOO!" As she screams and rolls around on the floor, her friends look on, weirded out. { Screen Shot } They wonder to themselves about what she is; a kid in a toy department? Miyu comments that Ran obsesses over fads more than anyone else she knows. Ran, in SD form, suddenly attacks SD Satsuki, yelling at her to give it. They start a tug-of-war over the bag. { Screen Shot } Rie and Miyu repeat their previous comments.
Ran thinks annoyedly to herself that Satsuki is really stingy, but that there's no helping it. She's outside of the classroom, looking out the window. Several girls pass by, whispering to themselves (not very softly) about some rumor about Hoshino-san (the girl who answered the question correctly in class). Ran perks up to listen. The girl exclaims that there was another girl who saw Hoshino-san walking with an older man in Shibuya! Her companion exclaims that isn't possible! Back in the classroom, Ran is looking at the magazine with her friends as she looks over at Hoshino, who is reading a book. She's reflecting on the words as she watches her.
Elsewhere, Miyu asks Ran what's wrong. Ran exclaims that it's a b-a-g. Looking up, Miyu says that it's a Meisho Daichi bag? Up on a statue in the middle of the park, Ran is looking around. { Screen Shot } Ran says that whatever you want, you must get. It's a GALS rule! Miyu replies that Ran isn't going to steal, is she. Ran says that she has a MUCH better way than stealing. Miyu says worriedly that Ran has a very simple mind, so she's worried. Ran punches her out.
As Ran looks around, she sees Hoshino running off in nice clothes. Curious, she runs off after Hoshino. As she follows the elegant figure, she finally catches up. She says that the clothes that Hoshino is wearing are flashy; very different from what she wears at school. (At Ran's school, they don't wear uniforms.) Hoshino looks around distractedly, and Ran asks her what's wrong. Hoshino says that nothing was wrong. Ran asks her if she was on her way to cram school, and Hoshino replies that she had a little emergency, so that she's ditching today. Ran notes that Hoshino does that type of thing, too. Humming for a moment, Ran abruptly asks Hoshino if she's doing escort services (while a sign pops over her head reading "She asks directly"). Hoshino is taken aback, and stares blankly at Ran - then she asks why she's asking. Ran says that's because there's a rumor going around school, and that if it is just a rumor, she'll squash it for her. As Hoshino stares at Ran, Ran exclaims laughingly all of a sudden that it HAS to be a rumor; an honor student like HOSHINO wouldn't be doing escort services! As Ran laughs, Hoshino's eyes narrow, and asks if it's odd - if she's doing escort services. She declares it loudly. Hoshino said she never meant to hide it; she can tell people if she wants. Ran is too shocked to say much. As Hoshino runs away, she thinks it's not really possible.
[ Eyecatch ]
As Ran returns, Miyu asks her where she's been. Ran replies that she was nowhere in particular. All of a sudden, Miyu sees two boys walking away, and she wonders if they were possibly Meisho Daichi? Ran sprints off, saying that it's a GAL rule that you never let go of your prey. { Screen Shot } As she approaches the two guys, she runs up to the dark haired one and pulls his bag strap towards her. He looks toward her, and she realizes with a start that it's Otohata Rei from the Super High School Grand Prix! { Screen Shot } She thinks to herself that he looks small minded; she could get it in one shot. Miyu finally catches up as Ran thinks to herself that now she can brag to everyone else. Smiling nicely, she asks him if she can have his bag. He asks her who she is, and she introduces herself as Kounan High School year one, Kotobuki Ran. So can she have it? He replies no way, and walks off, but she's still holding his bag strap, shocked that he said no. He starts dragging her as she holds on, screeching about how never letting go to something you grab is a GALS rule. { Screen Shot } Miyu thinks to herself that the way that's better than stealing is to just make him give it to her? Ran really is simple.
The other guy with Rei looks on, and tells her cheerfully that she should give up. Looking up at him, she exclaims that he's the 'second' guy. Surprised, he says that he's Asou Yuya. (Another frame pops up around him, reading "Mind full of thoughts of love," "2nd Place," "Super High School Grand Prix," and "Asou Yuya [16]). Yuya continues, saying that Rei's already had three bags stolen already, so it would be better if she just gave up. Just then, the "Ganguro" gang from earlier appears, yelling at her to go leave Rei alone, since he's a GAL idol - she should just go get questioned again! Ran yells at them that they're really annoying. As she tells them to go away, Rei suddenly asks, "How much?"
Surprised, Ran turns around. He asks her how much money she has; she replies that she's broke. Tipping up Ran's chin in a romantic gesture, he says that if she paid with her body, he wouldn't mind giving it to her. { Screen Shot } He doesn't actually like GALS, but Ran will sell herself like they all do, right? She suddenly gets angry, and backs away from him, exclaiming that not all GALS are sellouts. A very shocked Rei and Yuya look on, while Yuya whistles a bit in admiration. Ran stalks off (with his bag), while Miyu dashes after her. The three Ganguro look on, and exclaim, "Chomuka!" A little banner flies by, with the definition of Chomuka: Really Annoying!
Rei says flatly, "Bag..." Yuya says that he didn't like what Rei said either, even if it was a joke. (While he says that, Rei reaches into his jacket, and pulls out something. A thought bubble reading 'Phew' goes over his head, and then a sign points to the object, reading 'wallet.' { Screen Shot } Yuya continues, saying that Ran-chan really did have an impact on him. Happily, he says that maybe he'll invite her out somewhere. (A sign points to him, reading 'Making things up in his mind'.) Rei replies darkly that she's dangerous.
At the Kotobuki house, Ran is very annoyed that she took the bag. As she falls back on her bed, she thinks to herself that her pride doesn't allow her to steal. Ran then flashbacks to Hoshino saying that the rumor is true, and then thinks outloud to herself that she really can't leave her alone.
Ran is waiting for Hoshino the next morning before school, and when she greets her, Hoshino runs away. She follows her, and then corners her underneath a bridge. Ran tells her she should stop, but Hoshino says it's none of her business. Stuck, Ran asks why Hoshino wants money that badly. After a pause, Hoshino replies that her parents are very strict; she has a curfew, and isn't allowed a part-time job. She gets yelled at for bad grades, but she wants to have fun like everyone else, and go shopping, try on make-up. Ran asks if Hoshino couldn't possibly be... Hoshino replies, flushed, that no, all she's been doing is dating, but next time, probably... Ran is shocked. Hoshino yells that she can do whatever she wants; just leave her alone! She then runs off, as Ran runs after her...and trips. By the time Ran is up the hill, Hoshino is gone.
At school, the girls are adoring the bag. Satsuki asks if it's really Otohata-kun's bag? { Screen Shot } Ran replies that it is. Her two friends are touching it happily, holding it while Ran says they should while they can. { Screen Shot } Ran looks over at Hoshino's empty desk.
At the police station, Ran asks her brother if he could possibly find a record of a girl named Hoshino Aya. her brother replies that there isn't a record at his station, and she says he's not any help. She says she didn't expect Hoshino to have a record anyway... Her brother explodes, saying she shouldn't ask, then! Miyu pops in with a smile, saying that she just saw Hoshino a while ago! Ran freaks, while Miyu says it was amazing because Hoshino looked just like an oneegal!
The chalkboard pops up again, with 'GALS language course for good kids' written at the top. Below it is 'Onee-gal - Older sister GAL.' The 'teacher' says that 'Oneegal' means older sister-like GAL - this is GALS basics!
Ran freaks, interrogating Miyu. Miyu mentions Bunkamura Avenue, and Ran goes off, yelling to her brother that she's borrowing his bike. He yells at her to wait, but she's off. As she pedals, another sign points to her, reading 'The eyes of someone after her prey, part two.' Her brother yells nervously at her that the brakes are broken on that bike. Ran freaks, and runs into a tree, and spins off into the air.
At a traffic light, Rei and Yuya are sitting on a motorbike. Yuya wonders out loud if Ran-chan is around, and Rei says she's dangerous. They hear a girl screaming above, and as they look up, Ran lands smack dab behind Rei on the bike, shoving Yuya off. His helmet bounces off onto Ran's head. Ran says, "Otohata!" and then turning to Yuya, exclaims, "Two!" He says that he's Asou Yuya! { Screen Shot } Ran then demands that Otohata take her to Bunkamura Avenue. A little thought bubble appears above Yuya's head, reading 'She's not listening,' while Rei replies that she has to get off; this isn't a taxi. She tells him to just go, and when the light turns green, they go off (him being a little profane). Yuya runs after them, yelling 'Ran-chan,' and Ran's brother and Miyu run after her as well. As they're going along, she tells him to go faster, and he tells her he'll drop her off if she complains. As they drive by, she spots Hoshino, and then suddenly demands him to stop.
Hoshino runs off when she sees Ran, but Ran is faster. She stops her, saying that she can't compare in schoolwork, but she won't lose in a footrace. (The others who were chasing Ran appear, having finally caught up.) Hoshino is waiting for her escort, right? Hoshino replies that she told her to leave her alone, didn't she? It doesn't matter! Ran says that it does matter! They're classmates! Ran says that she doesn't have any money either, but being a GAL is fun - doesn't Hoshino have any pride? Hoshino says it doesn't matter anymore. Hoshino says originally she just felt guilty, but it's just dating, so as long as she just doesn't lose her heart, it doesn't matter! Ran says that to her, her body is just a thing, unlike her heart, right? Ran is very angry. Hoshino replies that is it really a bad thing? Ran yells at her to bite down, and slaps her hard across the face. Ran says, "Don't be a wimp; it hurts, doesn't it? If it didn't, you really would just be a thing. If your body really was just a thing, your heart would be dead! You should just cut off her flesh! If you can't do that, you shouldn't talk!" { Screen Shot } Everyone stares on, shocked. Hoshino is holding her cheek, stutters out a 'Kotobuki-san,' and begins to cry.
Miyu runs toward her, smiling and says that it'd be much more fun to hang out with them, rather than old men, and that they can listen to her problems. Looking up at Miyu, Hoshino says, "Yamazaki-san..." very softly. Smiling, she says that would be nice, but it might take a whole night. Ran's brother congratulates her, saying that Ran really is from a police family. Ran freaks, saying that she was just going with the flow.
Hoshino, standing up, hands Ran's brother a huge wad of money, saying that she hadn't used any of it, so would he please take it? { Screen Shot } He takes it and salutes her. Ran's eyes bug out, wondering how much takoyaki she could buy with that, then tells Rei that she's returning his bag. He smiles, saying that she showed him something interesting, so... She replies flatly that his sarcasm just doesn't fit his face. He replies that he's often told that. She smiles happily, saying 'thank you' (in English) as she runs off. Yuya says that Ran-chan is so cute, and Rei says that she's really dangerous.
Elsewhere, the three girls are talking. Hoshino asks them how they're going to have fun as GALS. Miyu says that they're going to go to the drug store and put on make-up samples. Ran says that they can do Karaoke; discount time until five! As Miyu and Ran run off, they turn around, since Hoshino isn't coming. Ran says, "Let's do Karaoke, Aya!" Hoshino is taken aback, and repeats, "Aya?" She smiles happily to herself, and then runs after them. A new frame appears around her, with 'New Friend' written at the top, with her name and age at the bottom. { Screen Shot } They run off, with Miyu saying that they have to hurry, or the discount time will be over. A last scene of them in a frame appears, with them posing. { Screen Shot } Ran says that they should never use money they don't have to - a GALS rule!
